Non-Verbal Communication

Non verbal communication is an essential tool for animators, it allows you to convey feelings and give information about a character in a purely visual way.

If a character is lazy for instance you can give him hunched shoulders and slow, sluggish movements.

Big open gestures can be used to easily show anger or happiness, where as closed expression are useful for showing fear or sadness amongst other emotions.

Intrinsic knowledge of emotions and gestures through our own observation allows us to empathise with characters. However non-verbal communication could give the wrong idea, if you use an extrinsically learned gesture such as a thumbs up somebody in another culture may be confused as a thumbs up is considered a vulgar gesture in some parts of the world.

Caution, good research and planning is essential but with all of these in mind non-verbal communication can help animators to produce outstanding animations.
