...1 april...

1 april, kikker in je bil / 1st of April, frog in your butt

Where does this expression come from? That has to do with the origin of the April 1 jokes, which lies with the Duke of Alva. It was his idea in the 16th century to fool the Dutch people. Together with King Filip II, he had decided to put a whole load of stew, herring and white bread in the vicinity of Leiden, and then secretly lay the whole army behind a hill. When all the people of Leiden came outside the city gates to get all those goodies, the Spaniards appeared, all with a frog in their hand! They then pushed them into the buttocks of the people of Leiden. Well, Spaniards laugh, people from Leiden don't, and then Alva thought it was beautiful. He went home again. This is of course not in the Dutch history books, because it is not really a proud moment for the Netherlands ... In Spain people still laugh about it tasty
