My Art - Christopher Harrington

ARTIST STATEMENT
My painting has evolved a great deal since 2003, and can broadly be divided into two areas of exploration. The first is my pursuit of purely formal, nonobjective art, which makes no reference to recognizable external things. The objects I create incorporate thick layers of transparent material that push them into the third-dimension and blur the line between painting and sculpture. My works frequently include iridescent or interference pigments, pumice, acrylic polymers, and resins. The works juxtapose soft flows of pigment with geometric shapes. The surfaces swirl, drip, or drift as I allow the materials to be acted upon by the laws of nature. My objects are experiments in the synthesis of opposites; each is an example of controlled chaos. I also strive to create works that are dynamic from a distance but that also have many secrets that are revealed only upon close inspection. I love the bold, aggressive minimalism of the 20th century, but I also love the delicate, obsessive detail of the Flemish Renaissance. I have tried to create objects that are informed by both approaches. I have been exhibiting these nonobjective works since 1996, in local, regional and international venues
