Day 512 - Day 147
“Blood is on the table and the mouths are choking… But I'm growing hungry”
Hunger Strike: Temple Of The Dog, Temple Of The Dog
Temple of the Dog was basically a side project for the Seattle bands Pearl Jam and Sound Garden. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is a pretty deep lyricist for the most part, and he really knows how to release a lot of his past and present without being so “In your face” and “Blatant” with his words. He’s one of the kings of “That’s not what the song is really about, but I’m glad you like it…”
My memory of this song is not about something deep, but rather something annoying. When I was in college I took a college course on “Intro to the Guitar” where I learned everything that I already knew. I had already learned how to string a guitar, tune a guitar and some basic chords. Easy A. That being said there was a guy next to me who was so pleased with himself because he learned the introduction to this song and played it. Over. Over. Over. And then he played it again. And again. And again…
Our final exam was that we had to play a song in front of the class, and seven people in the 23 person class played this song as a joke. No, I was not one of them (I played “Imagine” by John Lennon), but EVERYONE was better than the guy who was playing it every chance he got for an entire semester. When I hear this song I think of that class… and just have to laugh.
*** Artist Notes ***
Didn’t want to be morose and put my blood in a glass. I don’t suffer that much for my art.
Lyrics:
I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless
When my cup's already overfilled,
But it's on the table
The fire is cooking
And they're farming babies
While slaves are working
Blood is on the table
And the mouths are choking
But I'm growing hungry
I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless
When my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table
The fires cooking
And they're farming babies
While the slaves are all working
And it's on the table
The mouths are choking
But I'm growing hungry
I'm going hungry
