Day 467 - Day 102
“A simple prop to occupy my time, this one goes out to the one I love”
The One i Love: R.E.M., Document
There is a lot in this song that really epitomizes R.E.M. and Michael Stipe. It is a great song, but as a lot of R.E.M. songs go, this is a very simple song. E minor and D make up the verse, and G, A minor and C make up the Chorus. Even the lyrics should be right up Michael’s alley as he self admits to forgetting lyrics that he writes. Unlike a lot of their songs, he doesn’t slur the words to confuse the listener on this one.
Another great part of this song is the subject. A lot of people (including myself) thought that this song was a tribute to a person he loved. I mean it’s in the title, right? But typical of Michael, the words being sung mean something completely different. “Losing My Religion” was one of their biggest commercial hits, but it wasn’t about losing faith or religion as an entity- but one’s mind.
This song is about someone being used as a prop- a temporary fill of sorts, at least according to an interview Michael gave once. I think that we all know full well that horrible feeling of being used- either by a partner, or a company- by anything and anyone. It’s a bad feeling, and once you feel it, you never want to feel it again… and you never want to be on the giving end either… and sometimes you don’t mean to come across that way, but that’s the way it looks.
I am never one to pretend to be anything close to perfection. I have been used and abused, and I hated it. And I post this picture out to the cosmos to say to anyone that I may have ever used as a prop… I am truly sorry.
*** Artist Notes ***
I think many people are feeling used as a prop in this economy in the last year… so I thought a pink slip was appropriate!
Lyrics:
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love
Fire!!!
Fire!!!
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
Another prop has occupied my time
This one goes out to the one I love
Fire!!!
Fire!!!
