The album cover to this album is a collage, but I did not chose to set this picture up as a tribute to the album cover, but to the song. This song has a lot of deep meaning to me as it has also touched so many out there. Each line means something different to me and what it means one moment may mean something different another time.
A lot of the lines that speak out to me, touch on the hurts from my past- about the religious and oppressive things I went through with both the church and people close to me. Interpretation and perception really are monsters of the world. We perceive and make assumptions- we make actions and sometimes they are “right” and sometimes they are “wrong”.
How I view God and this Universe out there is different than the next person. How I view Love is different than the next person. Who is right and who is wrong? Is there even a right and a wrong? I am not trying to open a debate session, simply throw it out there that this song has so many interpretations, like so many things in life. And I don’t judge to say that any one of them are right or wrong.
As a song I think this is one of the deepest most emotional ones that U2 has ever written and it still speaks to me so many years after its release. Bono’s voice pulls you in, the base line moves you to tears and the Edge’s guitar back ground and solo seems to heal you all in the same moment.
