Day 391 - Day 026
“I can't sleep beneath the trees of wisdom, when your axe has cut the roots that feed them.”
What If: Creed, Human Clay
I have always loved this song…. The slow melodic intro, the slight build in momentum, and then Mark Tremonti’s guitar just rips open the harmonics and the song explodes with power, anger and a little bit of rage. I have always loved songs that run with such movements, taking you from zero to 90 in 0.5 seconds!
I can relate to a lot of the words in this song, especially in the manner of which Scott Stapp sings them… a bit of heated anger. Revenge, anger, vengeance? All in a day’s work for so many around us. The band often speaks of love and peace- harmony and spiritual bonds. But just like everything in the world, there is an opposite of it, and this song is their lyrical antithesis.
We’ve all had moment of rage and anger- frustration and hurt, where all we want to do is lash back and release. For me, I would bury myself into a very, very loud playing of this song- often repeatedly… and I’d feel better. Visually in this song I love the notion of someone cutting the trees of wisdom- especially when it is the very anger we have inside that that breaks down wisdom.
Lyrics:
I can't find the rhyme in all my reason
I've lost sense of time and all seasons
I feel I've been beaten down
By the words of men who have no grounds
I can't sleep beneath the trees of wisdom
When your ax has cut the roots that feed them
Forked tongues in bitter mouths
Can drive a man to bleed from inside out
What if you did?
What if you lied?
What if I avenge?
What if eye for an eye?
I've seen the wicked fruit of your vine
Destroy the man who lacks a strong mind
Human pride sings a vengeful song
Inspired by the times you've been walked on
My stage is shared by many millions
Who lift their hands up high because they feel this
We are one We are strong
The more you hold us down the more we press on
What if you did?
What if you lied?
What if I avenge?
What if eye for an eye?
I know I can't hold the hate inside my mind
'Cause what consumes your thoughts controls your life
So I'll just ask a question
A lonely simple question
I'll just ask one question
What if
What if I
What if you did?
What if you lied?
What if I avenge?
What if eye for an eye?
What if your words could be judged like a crime?
