Day 377 - Day 012

“They Forge Their Creativity Closer to the Heart”

Closer to the Heart: Rush, A Farewell to Kings / A Show of Hands / and so on…

By the time this project is at an end, it will be interesting to count how many Rush songs were on my list. I would guess 15-20… almost a whole month’s worth. What can I say, for so many reasons they are one of my favorite bands.

Anyone who has been to a Rush concert will tell you that this is one of a few handful of songs that just lights up the crowd. Their live version far out shadows the studio version, and you can find it on several of their live albums.

As for the song, I was first introduced to the song on their live album “A Show of Hands”. The song moved me to want to learn how to play all three parts: drum, base and guitar (Rush is a trio). This is one of the first “technical” songs that I learned to play on the guitars, and on the drums.

I remember playing the drums on this song in some quaint bar in the Swiss Alps. True story… we were in Switzerland on a musical tour- and we walked into a bar at about 11:30 at night. As we walked in the bar patrons were in the middle of throwing out the house band because they were drunk, high, or really poor musicians. Some say all three. We asked if we could get up and jam… and three hours (and many drinks later) we made a philosophical discovery. Apparently there is a bar in Switzerland- that likes to hire and fire drunk musicians… and the absolutely patrons die for Rush! By the end of the song the floor was literally moving up and down they were dancing so hard… it was awesome.

As is the case with all Rush albums, Neil Peart wrote the words… unlike Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Neil doesn’t really hide political songs as Michael once did. Political or not, there’s a lot of truth in the words. Every refrain speaks to what we as a world- not as a country but as a WORLD should do to come together!

On a side note, it was a tremendous joy to get back to my journaling as seen in the picture. I had to put it down when I quit smoking because it was a trigger… it’s good to get back to it!

Lyrics:

And the men who hold high places

Must be the ones to start

To mould a new reality

Closer to the Heart

The Blacksmith and the Artist

Reflect it in their art

Forge their creativity

Closer to the Heart

Philosophers and Ploughmen

Each must know his part

To sow a new mentality

Closer to the Heart

You can be the Captain

I will draw the Chart

Sailing into destiny

Closer to the Heart
