Day 2859 - Day 303

Today was a great day in the workshop. I think I finally came to the realization that there really are no failed projects. Every successful project is because of a result of other projects that didn’t go as I had expected, but I learned from them and improved one thing or another. I think growing up watching Bob Villa, or This Old House, and other shows like that- it set the expectation that every project should just go flawlessly, and when it doesn’t that must mean there’s something wrong with your abilities. Bologna!

Today I drilled split level holes in these beams- a 2 inch, ¾ inch, then ½ inch hole all so these bolts would fit perfectly snug. It worked perfectly and they are just what I needed. But as I drilled on the drill press I thought through all the other projects similar to those where I learned by mistake, that got me to where I am today.

I think I have a really good grasp on when to step away from a project because it’s not going the way I thought it would and when I need to step away and redesign what I had on my original plan. I’ve learned to take my time through every measure, every cut, every drill- and yes I finally realized that the whole trial and error is part of the creative process!
