Cozy corner-embroidery project

Cozy corner-embroidery project

Celebrate two of life's great joys, reading and embroidery, and escape the everyday hubbub in this scene of serenity.

MATERIALS

- Cotton fabric: 30x30cm, natural

- Stranded cotton: 1 skein each of black, light blue, coral, pale pink, red, dark teal, light teal and white

- DMC variegated stranded cotton: 1 skein of yellow (90)

- Embroidery hoop: 20cm diameter

- Wooden arch frame: 18x17cm (outer), 16x15cm (inner)

- Basic embroidery kit

STITCHES USED

Chain Stitch, French Knot, Padded Satin Stitch, Satin Stitch, Split Stitch, Stem Stitch

Notes: Use two strands of thread throughout the design, unless otherwise stated.

1.Transfer the design from the template onto the fabric using your preferred method. We used a heat-erasable pen and a light source, such as a window or a lightbox.

The beneᒟt of using this method is that you can trace the frame outline to help with positioning the frame, then remove these lines afterwards. Mount the fabric into the hoop.

Fill the background with Satin Stitch in light blue, at a roughly 45˚ angle. Fill the curtain sections with Padded Satin Stitch in white.

2. Next, add Satin Stitch to the book cover in light teal, and to the book spine in dark teal. Then, work the toe, heal and cuff of the sock using Satin Stitch in red.

3. Use Chain Stitch to work the sun in variegated yellow, starting from the outer edge and then working in a spiral towards the centre.
