2021 GIRO For Wouter!
Sunday, May 9: Stage 2, Stupinigi (Nichelino) - Novara, 179 km
It was exactly ten years ago on 9 May that the Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt died during a stage in the Tour of Italy. And his countryman TIM MERLIER knew that too. He immediately sprinted impressively to stage win on his debut in the Giro on Sunday, and formed with his hands a big W for Wouter!
Tim Merlier left renowned sprinters such as Giacomo Nizzolo, Elia Viviani, Dylan Groenewegen, Peter Sagan and Caleb Ewan behind him in Novara - where in 1968 a certain Eddy Merckx also won and conquered his first pink jersey.
Tim Merlier (1992) is a Belgian cyclocross and road cyclist who has been riding for the Belgian pro-continental team Alpecin-Fenix since 2019. He became Belgian road cycling champion in 2019 and won the Brussels Cycling Classic aka the former "Paris-Brussels" in 2020. Merlier is primarily a sprinter.
