1937 TDF The Resurrection of Lapébie
Stage 9: Friday, July 9, Briançon - Digne, 220 km.
Gino Bartali had been badly hurt during the 8th stage and was in no condition to defend his yellow jersey. He would finish more than 22 minutes behind stage winner ROGER LAPEBIE who had found himself back on the climb of the Col d'Allos.
Stage 9 from Briançon to Digne was indeed a ferocious stage. The riders had to climb the Izoard, the Vars and the Allos, all over 2000 meters high.
Sylvère Maes took the GC lead with Roger Lapébie following as second at 1 min 22 sec.
However, it need to be said that in fact Italian independent Mario Vicini should have been the GC leader, but he was penalized for getting help outside the authorized zone.
