1943 Het Rijke Vlaamsche Wielerleven
"The Rich Flemish Cycling Life" by Karel Van Wijnendaele.
A book about cycling sport written by someone who experienced it from close by. Very beautiful and fascinating written in the old Flemish style and language anno 1943, the middle of the second World War. Van Wijnendaele is known to have linked cycling and the Tour of Flanders to Flemish emancipation, in a time when the Belgian elite was still French-speaking. His articles fed the myth of "the Flandriens", Flemish men who rose above their humble origins and became cycling champions.
Karel Steyaert (Pseudonym KAREL VAN WIJNENDAELE), born in Wijnendaele (1882-1961) From 1902 to 1905 he was a cyclist. He became a sports journalist from 1907, and was the organizer of cycling races (including the Tour of Flanders). He also became race commissioner, track cycling director, general secretary of the Belgian Cycling Federation and selection boss of the Belgian team that participated at the Tour de France (period 1930 to 1948).
In 1909 he became an employee of the Antwerp monthly magazine "Our Champions" and also from the magazine "Sportvriend" from Izegem.
In 1913 he founded the magazine "SPORTWERELD", a daily newspaper of which he was editor and owner. In 1938 there was a collaboration with "The newspapaer".
Karel Van Wijnendaele is the founder of sports journalism in Flanders.
