Despite the Merlin's small size this bird of prey has a strong dashing flight that gives this bird the ability to startle small birds and catch them by its low hunting flight. the Merlin is Europe's smallest bird of prey. The male differs in appearance by greyish-blue above with a reddish-buff underside, the female is larger than the male. Can be seen in the preferred habitat of moorland, upland bogs, lowland heaths and coastal marshes.
