Male Black-Tailed Skimmer Dragonfly - Orthetrum cansellatum
A medium sized dragonfly that has increased substantially in the last century in numbers and in its range. The female lacks the powder-blue colour abdomen and greenish-blue eyes of the male seen here and instead has brown eyes and a yellow abdomen. This species of dragonfly will favour slow-flowing rivers, ponds, lowland lakes, and will even tolerate brackish water. Can be seen on the wing from late April to late September.
