HMS Brinton Departing

Looking down on the River Dart as HMS Brinton (M1114) sails down the river and out to sea in early 1979.

Brinton was one of 119 Ton-class minesweepers built in the 1950s for the Royal Navy and various other navies, including the South African Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. Later, 16 Royal Navy units were converted to mine hunters.

John Thornycroft of Southampton was the lead constructor, but 15 other yards participated in the construction programme.. Each displaced 447 tonnes and was 46m in length, 8.5m in the beam and with a draught of 2.4m. Two diesels gave them a speed of 15 kt. They carried a crew of 33.

The hulls were composed of a double layer of mahogany planking and the rest mainly from aluminium and other non-ferromagnetic materials.
