Pulau Brani Children's School

This image is of the school for all infants and primary school-age children of British Army families on the island of Pulau Brani in Singapore Harbour.

We joined the school in early 1967 after the family moved from mainland Singapore in January 1967. At that time the school had just two classes to cover all the age groups. It shut (I think) in the summer of 1967 and all the children then faced a long daily journey to Wessex Junior and Infants School at Wessex Barracks on the mainland.

The journey consisted of minibus down to a jetty, a British Army harbour launch across the harbour to Jardine Steps and then a bus to Wessex Infant and Junior School. All in time for an 8 a.m. start (British Army tropical routine). School finished at 1 p.m. unless we stayed for what were effectively extra-curricular classes (sport, music and other activities), followed by the reverse journey back to Pulau Brani.

This was on the first roll of film I ever shot, on my Kodak point-and-shoot camera that I got for my birthday in 1967. By the time of the shot the school was shut.
