Taking the Shopping Home?
These three ladies were carrying what I assume was their shopping home from local shops/markets on a beautiful sunny day. However, on closer inspection the lady on the right may be taking fish to market based on looking at the contents of the visible basket.
The two going the other way in sunhats have what seem to me relatively ornate baskets. The one in the middle of shot seems to be carrying a variety of gourds or melons, and the one on the left seems to have three bottles in wicker on the front and a sack of something on the back.
The trio were on a bridge crossing the River Li in the southern Chinese town of Guilin when I took this picture in the summer of 1984. It would appear I took it through the window of a tourist bus (reflections in the upper left and upper right of image).
The reason for us visiting Guilin can be seen above the lady on the left - that limestone pimple in the background is a hint of the spectacular karst scenery that can be found around the town.
Scanned from a negative.
