Steam Engine - of Sorts

This unlabelled piece of large machinery is in the BIG Store at what is now the Historic Dockyard at Chatham. Information on www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/POWER/highsped/highsped.htm#bro tells us that it is a Peter Brotherhood Ltd high-speed steam engine that appears to have been converted into an air compressor. I have to wonder, to what end? And what was the engine originally used for?

Off to the left beyond the partially-visible tractor above is a full naval steam plant (boiler, turbine and generator set), so I assume that the engine above might also be naval but that needs somone out there with the knowledge to confirm it.

At the time of my visit the various pieces of large machinery, equipment, vehicles, boats and parts in the BIG Store were just parked there, rather than being displayed. I note more recent images show that at least some of the vehicles are now being presented rather than just parked. Perhaps one day the heavy equipment will also be cleaned and properly displayed/labelled.
