Arts, Gardens, Sport

In the foreground, on this side of the St Kilda Road that crosses the image, can be seen part of the Arts Centre Melbourne. On the other side of the road is Queen Victoria Gardens and then beyond the River Yarra is the Sports and Entertainment Complex, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Melbourne Park tennis complex.

In the foreground, the building with the mast atop it is the State Theatre, which houses an underground 2,000-seat auditorium. The mast is described as a large steel spire with a wrap-around base. It was completed in 1996, and reaches 162m high, replacing an earlier, shorter spire that had become unsafe. The spire is illuminated with some 6,600m of optic fibre tubing, 150m of neon tubing on the mast and 14,000 incandescent lamps on the spire's skirt. The metal webbing of the spire is reportedly influenced by the billowing of a ballerina's tutu and the Eiffel Tower.

A wedge-tailed eagle and peregrine falcon were utilised in early 2008 to deter groups of sulphur-crested cockatoos from damaging the spire's electrical fittings and thimble-sized lights. On 1 January 2012 the spire was accidentally set afire by New Year's Eve fireworks. Two sides of the structure were set ablaze by fireworks that apparently discharged improperly, causing flaming debris to fall to the ground, but causing only cosmetic damage to the tower.

The structure to the right of the State Theatre is the National Gallery of Victoria.

The scene is viewed through tinted glass from the Eureka Skydeck on the 88th floor of 7, Riverside Quay, Southbank.
