Surveillance, Old and New
The very decorative bronze lamp standard is one of a pair beside the entrance to the Grade II-listed Unilever Building on the corner of Victoria Embankment and New Bridge Street at Blackfriars.
The neoclassical Art Deco building was built of Portland Stone on a steel frame in 1930-32, by J Lomax Simpson, in collaboration with Burnet, Tait and Partners. Presumably in the day it gave light for night watchment and/or policemen patrolling in the area.
Today, the modern CCTV fitting presumably gives a better surveillance capability to the building's security team.
In the distance, beyond the traffic, can be seen the BNY Mellon Centre, with St Paul's Cathedral rising beyond that.
