Vanguard Nearing the Breakers

Having yesterday posted a photo of her in her prime, I thought I'd revisit an earlier post. I hope you will agree this appears to be a considerable improvement on my original!

 

My father took this image as Vanguard, towed by probably Fleet tugs, approached the Rhu Narrows, en route to Faslane for breaking-up. Wikipedia notes that she arrived there on 12 June 1960, so that must be the date, although there is no indication of this on the slide.

 

At 51,000 tons plus, she was Britain's biggest, fastest, and the world's last, battleship. My father thought that this was potentially the last photo of her at sea. Taken from aboard an Army tank landing craft at/near Helensburgh.
