NATO Ships Gathering

Spanish, Canadian and Portuguese navy ships operating under NATO auspices are seen here in the harbour at Leith.

In the foreground on the left is the Spanish Navy's Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate SPS Blaz de Lezo (F103). Its primary combat system is the American Aegis combat system, with the distinctive AN/SPY-1D radar panels on the forward superstructure.

Outboard of her is the Royal Canadian Navy's Halifax-class frigate HMCS Winnipeg (FFH 338) which is more normally seen in northern Pacific waters.

Beyond them is the Portuguese Navy's Bartolomeo Dias-class frigate NRP D Francisco de Almeida (F334). She started life as the RNLN Van Galen (F834), a Karel Doorman-class frigate in the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was transferred to Portugal in 1994 along with a sister ship.

I assumed the vessels were in harbour before participating in Joint Warrior 152. Seen in waning autumnal sunshine from atop the Ocean Terminal's multi-storey car park. The hills in the distance are across the Firth of Forth in the Kingdom of Fife.
