4x400m Relay Handover

In this shot, the men's 4x400m relay at London2012 heads towards its climax with the 3rd leg runners handing over to those who will finish the race. It looks close here with four teams (Trinidad & Tobago, Great Britain, Russia and Belgium) within 5m of each other.

But in reality, these four are racing for the bronze medal, as you can see the American and Bahamian 3rd leg runners just off the track to the right, with their 4th leg runners having already run well out of shot. The Bahamians went on to pull off a truly magnificent win against the Americans in a new national record of two minutes, 56.72 seconds.

Note in the upper left of the shot that a small piece of history is about to occur as Oscar Pistorius awaits the baton exchange for South Africa. He thus became the first individual to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics track and field finals, having earlier made the semi-finals of the individual 400m.

Haven't things changed for him since then?

Incidentally, the race for third place was won by the Trinidadians, who managed to finish 0.13 seconds ahead of the British. The South Africans came eighth, as the Cuban team did not finish.
