Reduced Leaves

Most plants live off water, but have you ever wondered why cacti are known for being able to live off very little amounts of water? Maintaining water is one of the main characteristics that cacti are known for doing. The reason being is because of their reduced leaves. As you can see from the photo, cacti do not have leaves. After a long period of time, many plants have adapted to dry conditions by forming reduced leaves. Reduced leaves can either be relatively thin or narrow. This cactus has relatively thin leaves. Because these leaves are so thin, they have lost their photosynthetic capacity of conserving water.
