Bat Update 2

For all those interested in our bat care work here is an update. This years bat season started at the beginning of February with a Pipistrelle which was found grounded.Unfortunately it had broken shoulder so sadly he needed to be euthanized.Later in the month we had a call to a Pipistrelle found in a school playing field but this had two broken wings after being caught by a cat and again needed to be euthanized. The following day we were called to a bat found in a shower drain, the finders put it in a box and when we arrived we thought that it was not going to make it but after a few weeks of care she was fit and well and back in the wild.

March started the same way as february with another catted Pipistrelle this one had a broken lower arm and it was hoped that after being splinted it might have healed but unfortunately after six weeks it didn't heal so again he was euthanized. We were then handed a Brown Long Eared Bat with blood pouring from a wound under its wing. The wound was cleaned and a large splinter was removed, the bleeding stopped and he was cared for until he was ready for release. We later found out that where he was found the roof was being rethatched and it's possible he was caught when they were packing the roof with new thatching.

Next was another Pip that was found on the floor of a coal shed, when we looked him over we noticed one of his foot was badly injured and two of his toes were necrotic so they were removed and after a few weeks of care and observation to see that he would survive back in the wild he was released.

April stared quietly until we collected a very smelly and sick Brown Long Eared that was found on a cattle shed floor,we gave her a good bath and a few weeks of care and she was released back to the wild.We think she went to get a drink of water but ended up covered in cow muck which she licked off and made herself sick.

So the rest of April and most of May was quiet until last week when we were called to a grounded Whiskered bat, another catted Pip but luckily no injures, all still in care and ended on Saturday with a Grounded Pip that had died by the time we got the call.Just waiting for baby bat season to start πŸ˜‰
