More information about the "House of Crates"

A man I know, by name of Sid who lived and worked as foreman on a nearby farm, remembers the beer crates being placed there in the late 60s. This is what he has told me.

"They belonged to the farmer Curley Fletcher who owned the farm on the opposite side of the road,at that time. It seems he obtained the redundant beer crates with the idea in mind that they could be used to transport Celery Heads" . At that time a lot of Celery was being grown in that area.

When I lived there in 1953 I remember large lorries stacked 6ft high maybe more with crates of Celery. As far as I can remember Celery crates allowed a dozen heads to stand upright with the leaves trimmed level to the top of the crate and were non- returnable.

It seems Curley Fletcher's plan for the crates was never used, and the grates were allowed to decay for the last 35-40 years.
