Bittern stalking reed bed Norfolk 24.11.2014 PART 2 (1)

What has been uploaded is proof that patience pays off because we have tried to photograph bitterns last week spending five hours each time in a hide and nothing turned up.

Today we thought we were about to enjoy similar ’luck’ when this bird ambled out of the tall reeds but in the wrong spot as the light was all wrong because of the only angle I had. Four hours in a bitterly cold hide but hey here was something at which to click. 18,000 ticks of the clock, so who would I not seize the moment?!!!!

We had seen bitterns before many times but they never fail to add something special to the day in which they are spotted as they are not too cooperative.

We just sat and watched as it made it steady slow progress through the reeds striking different poses at almost every step, Here the bitterly cold wind just teased its feathers near the head.

I was not going to miss my moment so got clicking trying to capture the action that we saw – it was exciting even for an old couple like ourselves. Sad really I suppose.
