Marbled milk 1

Colourful science

 

Add several drops of food colouring to the surface of a plate of milk. Then touch the milk with a cotton bud covered with washing up liquid or bubble bath. Immediately the colours in the milk start to swirl around, and provide an entertaining show for a couple of minutes.

 

The detergent interferes with the emulsion of fat droplets and milk proteins in the milk - it binds to both the fat and the liquid components. It also alters the surface tension of the milk.

 

Time for some kitchen science .. try comparing different types of milk or milk substitutes, and testing the detergent effects of different beauty products.
