Detecting patterns of emergence, hierarchy, and transformation can be done simply through careful observation and analysis of the physical world. By recognizing and studying the biological processes of these organisms, we can begin to figure out how they function specifically and also within a broader context. My photo of a maple tree’s leaves and seed pods demonstrates the ability of the tree to photosynthesize, and also its potential to reproduce and to ensure that it will carry on its genes for many future generations. By examining the leaves on a much deeper level, we can also determine their exact makeup - what chemicals and properties are needed, and what processes their cells must carry out in order to complete this operation. The collaboration which occurs during this process is a type of transformation, one which will also repeated when the tree reproduces, and also when it prepares for the arrival of different seasons. Adaptation to its environment is an important aspect of evolution. This tree also plays a part in the larger ecosystem in which it lives. Because it is an “open system,” it is able to interact with other plants and even animals, placing it within a certain hierarchy.
