Black Diamonds over the Pine Pass

The Pine Pass in North Eastern British Columbia is a relatively obscure pass through the Rocky Mountains. While Canadian Pacific gained fame with their crossing to the south, Pacific Great Eastern's grade gained little attention outside of the province when constructed.

To this day very few railfans venture to this are of the country, now under the helm of Canadian National and operated as the Chetwynd Subdivision. One of the more iconic locations is the southern portal of the Azouzetta Tunnel at mile 597.9

On this September morning we witness southbound loaded coal train C765 assault the pass with 2 of General Electric's newest locomotive models in Run 8. Five sets later and the Chetwynd Sub became a new favorite line to photograph
