In order to fit in the loop at Mallaig the buffet coach was detached at Fort William, and therefore a single locomotive could work the tour without assistance.
A couple of years later top and tail operation would be the preferred method of working on the Mallaigs, destroying the opportunity for a single engine on a decent load on the West Highland.
