Assignment 1

War creates a lot of division in our world today, causing citizens of a certain culture to view others differently and often discriminately. However, it also brings to light different cultures and the way people in different regions look. Fashion takes this positive aspect and elevates it to another level. Although the man on the left is in New Delhi, India and the man on the right is in New York, New York, the style of clothing they are wearing are very similar but twisted to represent their own cultures. The man on the left is wearing a patka, a traditional head covering worn by Sikhs. The man on the right wears a very American hat, both minor details illustrating the two men's differences while looking very similar. According to The Levin Institute, a characteristic of globalization is the integration of people of different nations that affects people culturally. It is now very fashionable to incorporate clothing from different cultures into single outfits and be a walking representation of globalization.

When I saw these two photos, I thought it was really interesting how these two men were dressed in such similar yet distinct styles and in completely different cities so I thought putting the two portraits together represented a unity between the two while still maintaining their differences by a sharp change, not blurring the transition. The barbed wire represents the divides war creates, but the writing "fashion unites when war divides" is placed on top because fashion transcends the negative aspects war can create.
