The magician got away undetected

Autumn of 1845 at Lord Southampton’s country manor : Quorndon Hall, Leicestershire:

A young girl who was staying there with her titled parents observed a magician performing in the towns green. Insisting that he come and do his tricks at the manor, Lord Southampton obeyed the girls request and arranged for him to perform at the estate to entertain the children visiting while their parents were attending the annual Autumn Ball that weekend.

When he arrived the young handsome lad endeared himself to the older sister of the girl who had insisted upon his appearance. After his show he joined her and her circle of friends for the evening. He won them all over, flirting from one gowned lady to another. But he soon managed to disappear from the gathering.

Later that evening it was discovered that the Daughter was missing her expensive brooch. Than almost simultaneously a friend of hers missed her valuable necklace of pearl strings, Than yet a third friend discovered her diamond earrings vanished, without so much as a prickling. This one remembered that the magician had lifted long flowing her hair up and let it down her back while complimenting her on the sparkle of her cascading earrings held by a simple clasp to her ears. Two other young woman also discovered some of their diamonds were missing also.

A search was made for the magician, but he had simply melted away, to where no one ever found out and it remained a mystery.

However any suspicions about the young nimble fingered magician being the thief were confirmed late the next morning.

After brunch several of the mothers had gone to their children’s rooms to collect the jewels that they had adorned their offspring with before sending them down to be entertained by the magician the previous evening. There had been about a dozen young females sent to the gathering not only wearing fancy dresses but also pearls, diamonds and other small pieces of gemstone jewellery, necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, even a small diamond tiara that the young daughter, who asked for the magician’s attendance, had insisted upon wearing with her satin gown.

When they discovered that some of the jewelry had been unaccounted for ( the most expensive ones) they question their Nannies. It was discovered that the children had been left unsupervised while the Magician had entertained them. And as he had done so, performing his sleight of hand tricks, he had primarily picked certain young ladies from the audience to help him, including the daughter.

Not surprisingly it was these same young ladies whom their nannies had discovered were missing jewelry as they collected them and helped them undress for bed after the show. They did not want to bother the parents at the party, so no mention was made until the next morning when the Mothers had asked for them.

The magician got away with the jewels leaving his victims helpless in his wake.
