In early 1900’s a European thief of unknown nationality,( never caught or identified), was popularly known as Le Shepared. He earned this moniker because of his adeptness with parting wealthy ladies from the expensive pieces of jewellery they were wearing (Akin to a Shepard trimming wool from lambs). He performed these subtle thefts while haunting the “Black Tie” Affairs, Balls, Receptions, and Soiree’s that promised to be attended by the very upper crust of Europe’s jewel laden females.

. He was also prime suspect in several spectacular jewel thefts that emptied out the glittering contents of several wealthy lady’s jewellery cases, unguarded while their mistress’s were attending the above mentioned fancy dressed functions. A few times, so the stories circulating at the time went, he would lift a piece of jewellery m’lady was wearing, and then knowing she was safely out of the picture, visit milady’s boudoir and pick it clean of anything sparkly and expensive. Such may have been the case with lady St-clair…

One of the most notorious unsolved cases evolved around Lord Perter St-Clair.

At the wedding of Lord St-Clair and his bride, one of the gifts was tickets for Le Chat Noir , for a Cabaret being presented there , put on by the Salon Les Arts Incohérents during the same period they would be at their lune de miel (Honeymoon).

While the couple was out one evening attending the play, the Lady St-Clair went to “powder her nose” during intermission. When the play resumes, she noticed the loss of her diamond bracelet that she remembers playing during the thrilling end of Act two, just before the curtains came up for intermission. The valuable bracelet was never recovered.

Meanwhile, a thief broke into the Lady’s Dressing room during the time the show was being presented, making off with several extremely valuable collections of family jewels.

But, was that all? Some say that an article of some importance to a certain secret society that Lord Perter was a major officer, was also taken that evening.

Coincidently, at the ball following the lavish St-Claire wedding, of the almost 400 guests in attendance at the Middle Temple Hall, Temple, London ,several wealthy female guests reported the loss of some extremely valuable jewelled bracelets, a jewelled ring , a navette diamond brioche, and a diamond necklace. Also, no one ever took credit for giving the unmarked gift of the tickets to attend the show being put on at the French café’ Le Chat Noir.

Was Le Shepared in attendance scoping out Lady St-Claire’s Jewels? Did he aslo take the time to collect a few “trifles” from a few of the Ladies’ in attendance? Did he then follow the newlyweds to France, to the play, to Mademoiselles boudoir?
