For my midterm project I chose to emulate the style of Julieanne Kost. Kost uses Photoshop extensively in her work to create evocative invented scenes. Her images are composites created using several images, textures and effects. Kost starts out with a vision of a particular emotion or feeling in mind and uses her skills in Photoshop to achieve the emotion. Her images may be made up of source images taken at different times and in different places. She is always on the lookout for interesting elements such as textures that she can put to use in a future image. Many of her source images come from nature but through compositing and layering she creates her own environment.

Kost uses masking extensively to seamlessly combine the many source images into the composite image. Another element that Kost uses to achieve the final product she has in mind is color. She uses color to unify the various elements within the composite. When creating her images, she often leaves adjusting the color until the end of the process.

I chose to emulate Julieanne Kost’s style because I liked her images. I like that although they are based on natural elements they’re entirely her own creation. Her style is very different from my own, since I am generally a pretty straight shooter, so I figured it would be a challenge. I also really enjoy working in Photoshop, so I thought that this would be a good way to try out some new techniques and improve on my skills. For my image, I used five source images taken in the last year or so in different places and combined them using some of the techniques Julieanne Kost used in her tutorial videos for Adobe TV.
