Joe Martin Stage Race - Stage 3 Road Race
The predicted sprint finish for today's Stage 3 road race at Joe Martin materialized as expected, however it was anything but routine getting to the finish line. An early 2 man move opened a 3 minute lead but was slowly reeled in over the next couple laps. A late move of danger men, including Matt Cooke, caused panic in the field, but an ardent chase by the Bissell and Kenda teams closed the gap in the final kilometers.
Inside of the last 2km a crash in the Bissell leadout train took down their sprinters, the Colombian National squad and our man Logan Loader. Loader's crash was his second of the week, but unlike yesterday, there was not enough distance left to move back into the fray. All crashers ended on same time as the leaders.
Eric Marcotte of Elbow's Racing won the day, while his teammate Joseph Schmaltz finished 3rd. Yesterday's winner Shawn Milne slotted between the two teammates for another 6 seconds in bonus time, moving the Kenda rider up to 2nd on GC. In a sweet surprise, Team Exergy's Sam Johnson rolled through in 6th position for his first NRC Top 10 placing since joining the squad in 2011.
Way to go Sam!
