Team Exergy
Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium
Yesterday marked the debut of Team Exergy’s criterium squad
as the boys began their East Coast spring tour with the Presbyterian Hospital
Criterium in Charlotte, NC. Due to a travel delay for Faustino Alzate, the team
started with only five riders: Ben Chaddock, Kevin and Conor Mullervy, Carlos Alzate
and Serge Tvetcov.
A break formed early on in the 50-mile race with three
riders taking off after only 8 laps. Those riders stayed off the
front for most of the race, but Team Exergy worked together with United
Healthcare to minimize the gap, which reached a maximum of 48 seconds.
With one-half lap remaining Team Exergy positioned Carlos perfectly
toward the left of United Healthcare’s riders in preparation for the final
sprint. United Healthcare, however, shattered everyone with its experienced and
well-oiled lead-out train. UHC took first and third for the day, with Carlos
crossing the line in fifth place.
Overall, yesterday’s effort by the crit squad pleased
Assistant Director Sportif Ken Mills. Team Exergy’s plan for the day involved protecting Carlos for the final field sprint. To that end Ben and Kevin did a
great job of keeping him toward the front of the pack and delivering him to
within striking distance of the win. Each race provides invaluable experience for this young crew, and the lads
are looking more dangerous for the weeks ahead. The next race on the docket is Sunnyking on April 21st.
