Els coloms fora de control esdevenen una plaga. El seu nombre excessiu crea malestar i molèsties.
Embruten els llocs on reposen i on crien.
El colom, com totes les aus, produeix unes excretes corrosives. Aquest residu, la colomassa, perjudica façanes i edificis.
Les colònies de coloms s'acostumen a concentrar en edificis dels barris antics. Són un punt més afegit al procés de degradació dels centres urbans.
Hi ha cert risc, que normalment no és greu, que transmetin alguna malaltia a les persones. Hi ha un risc més elevat que transmetin malalties a altres aus.
A més també els perjudica a ells: quants més coloms hi hagi també hi haurà més competència per l'aliment, de forma que començaran a aparèixer coloms malalts i epidèmies entre ells.
