GM Holden Aust, Woodwork shop: Cocktail Cabinet, 1937 (AGSA)
GM Holden Aust, Woodwork shop: Cocktail Cabinet, 1937 (AGSA)
The artisans in the General Motors Holden Australia Woodwork shop (Woodville, SA; established 1924) made this
Cocktail cabinet, in 1937, out of Tasmanian oak, with chromed steel handle mounts.
It came to the Art Gallery as a gift of the Executors of the Estate of Sir Laurence Hartnett in 1986.
The story told by an Art Gallery Staff Member was that when the shop closed the artisans working there decided to use up all the wood in store and this was one of the objects they made. I love how it looks like a car, as if these guys couldn’t ‘see’ any other shape, no matter that its function was as a cocktail cabinet, and a very handsome one too.
