Ai Weiwei: Oil Spill; 2006 (1 of 2)
Ai Weiwei: Oil Spill; 2006 - at the White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney (2019)
Ceramic. Commissioned & made by Chinese master porcelain makers after much trial & error in some sort of ironic comment on porcelain making itself. Each individual piece is quite thick & bows slightly into the middle & all are quite heavy & required some ingenuity to exhibit safely. Apparently this multi-piece work was previously shown on the floor but there were concerns that visitors might step on them and that they might break.
The caption (2 of 2) reads, in part: "Ai Weiwei asks us to consider the Faustian bargain that has resulted in unprecedented levels of pollution in the wake of China's modernisation."
This piece is from the White Rabbit Gallery's 'Super Natural' Exhibition, 2019. The gallery exhibits contemporary Chinese art (2000- ) from a private collection; the guided tour adds another level of detail & interest - see www.whiterabbitcollection.org/
NB. Interestingly, Flickr reports that "oil spill" is an invalid tag. Airbrushing reality? Ok, it has allowed it now: looks like this was a Flickr technical issue.
