Aubrey day before 18

Since Aubrey turned two, I’ve been making a portrait of my boys every year on the day before their birthday. It’s been my longest running personal project. I try to create these portraits with cues to what is going on in their lives in that moment.

We made this portrait together last night and today Aubrey turns 18. This portrait is about him moving through his adolescence into adulthood. He is in that brief moment between finishing high school and starting adult life. The potential of his future is emerging.

Having chosen film and philosophy as electives in his final year of high school, Aubrey is developing his personal aesthetic and world view in more intentional and meaningful ways. It’s been particularly satisfying for me to see him explore video and photography. This year’s portrait is bold in visual style to reflect this development.

Aubrey is enrolled in the Motion Picture Arts Program at Capilano University and starts this fall. I can’t wait to see what his future holds.

Happy birthday Aubrey. I love you.

This image was made with my GFX 50S II and GF 80mm. Light is from an optical snoot with gobo mounted to a single White Lightning Ultra 600 camera right about 12ft away. Triggered with Pocket Wizards. Processed in Capture One Pro with some light patching and cloning in Photoshop.
