Class 120 DMU @ North Berwick, 05/12/1986 [slide 8602]

Class 120 set formation C507 consisting of vehicles W53698 W59285 W51781 is seen at North Berwick, working the shuttle service to Edinburgh Waverley, on Friday 05/12/1986.

The Class 120 DMUs were built by BR Swindon Works 1958-59 for Cross-Country services, having comfortable 2+2 / 2+1 interior seating, including curtains in second class. They worked most regions of British Rail up until the final cars were withdrawn in 1989. Although a fairly large class of 194 vehicles, only one trailer car of these distinctive DMUs was saved for preservation, probably due to them having asbestos insulation.

This example appears to have recently transferred from Western Region - Cardiff Division, the car numbers having W-prefixing and the C-prefix set number. It also has a bracket between the two cab front windows for carrying the extra headlight used on the Central Wales line.

In typically difficult December lighting, it is seen waiting to return to Edinburgh Waverley.
