Class 105 DMU @ Grantham, in 1985 [slide 8501]
Class 105s were once a common site on secondary services in Eastern counties of England, sharing routes with Class 114s. In a typical scene from the region, DTS(L) no. E54434 is seen in the bay platform at Grantham in 1985, awaiting departure with a service to Skegness.
The distinctive Class 105 DMUs were built by Cravens of Sheffield 1956-59, numbering some 302 cars in total. They were a particularly common sight in Eastern England / East Anglia, as well as the North West. Never refurbished, almost all examples retained plain overall BR blue livery until withdrawal. Having blue asbestos insulation, elimination of the class rapidly gathered pace in the mid-1980s as second generation DMUs entered service, with the final Class 105s being taken out of service in 1988. Only three cars were preserved.
