Trewellard Zawn - the old arsenic works.

The remains of the arsenic works dominate the scene above Trewellard Zawn - the rocks are stained by iron oxide and other minerals leached from the old workings.

Part of the Levant mine, arsenic was obtained as a by-product of calcinating the tin concentrates. In 50 years from 1854 the mine produced some 4000 tons of crude arsenic.

As you can imagine, the life span of the miners in the area, was relatively short.
