Black-tailed godwit. Breeding plumage.

Limosa limosa

Intrigued by the name and hit Google.

First appearance in print, in Latin in 1544 as "godwittam" which was eventually shortened to Godwit. The OED suggests that it comes from "God" and "wit" meaning to know. Another interpretation is that it comes from the Old English "god" meaning good and "wihte" meaning creature - it was good to eat, in fact Sir Thomas Browne wrote that the "Godwyt" was "the daintiest dish in England"
