USCGC Polar Star
[ship offload] The USCGC icebreaker, just pulling into Winter Quarters Bay. This is our last visiting ship of the season. On 14 Feb 06, I was able to tour this boat - - that black "crows nest" is the aloft conn, from where the ship is driven through the ice. The large white box between the stack and the fantail is the helo garage - - they can land a helocopter on the fantail and then pull it inside for protection, maintenance, etc. When the helo garage is unoccupied, it's a great space for all kinds of recreation activities.
