sun dog - June 2005

I wish every great picture were mine - - this was taken last summer at Summit Camp, Greenland by a friend, Brent Folmer. Notice the spikes of light on the sides and the central sun pillar extending from the sun to the horizon. Sometimes sun dogs have multiple rings and rainbows at the spikes. Sundogs [parhelion] are produced only by clouds cold enough to consist entirely of ice crystals. Such clouds are usually only found at temperatures below -20C
