Orava Castle
Situated on a rock high above the Orava River, Orava Castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia.
The castle was built in the 13th century, and stands on the site of an old wooden fortification, built after the Tartar invasion of 1241.
In 1800, an enormous fire destroyed all the wooden parts of the castle. Several objects from the Upper and Middle Castle were reconstructed in 1861, while a few objects from the Lower Castle were recovered from the fire.
The castle was also used as a filming location for the 1922 film, Nosferatu.
