Naked Fat Rant

Naked Fat Rave is a collective of several high-profile comic-book artists who have banded together to share a booth at Comic-Con. It's also the booth that Andy asked me to target in order to purchase some original art of his fave Marvel character.

Normally, it's a pretty simple transaction. I've got paper, the artist has ink. I've got money, he's got talent. And so on. I've become pretty good at brokering the deal.

However, I have only dealt with the folks in Artists Alley, one at a time. It seems that by banding together, the artists have consolidated their power, to the point where each feels free to create arbitrary "rules" for how the sketches will be produced, and who is worthy to receive them.

First come, first served is apparently no longer an option.

Some of the artists would only do headshot sketches, and one would only do caricatures of the requester AS a superhero character. I'm not calling any of the artists out, or naming any names (yet) but it seems like some of them were taking perverse pleasure in this process - if the artist wanted a person to cluck like a chicken to receive art, they had that kind of power.

Then we have the added factor of the artists' wives, some of whom act as their business managers. Again, I'm not ready to tell the full story just yet, but in my opinion, the fewer people involved in the deal, the better. As a literal patron of the arts, I had better results dealing directly with individual artists, that's all I'm saying.
